5 Ways to Improve Your Online Relationship

Just like regular real-world relationships, online relationships need tending, to grow.

Here are some quick tips to help improve your online relationship over time.

1. Take time and make time.  Although this one should be an obvious, you’d be surprised how many people don’t take the time to give their significant other enough time.

Does your online date get in touch with you regularly? Do you do the same? Neglecting virtual meetings can be considered abuse or neglect, so treat each other’s time with respect. If it’s lacking, might mean time to move on.

2. Communication needs to “feel” right for both of you. If one of you is too pushy about meeting, for instance, that can give off bad vibes. So don’t rush. Take time to learn more about each other and develop trust.

3. Respect each others privacy. Don’t share personal email addresses or digital photos online, for example, if your online date sent you the information in confidence.  Just because you have no problem posting pictures online, doesn’t mean the other person does. You should ask before you post anything online of another person.

4. Share special online and offline fun times. It doesn’t matter if you are in an offline or online relationship … you still need to have special and fun things that you can do. Online – send greeting cards, links to favorite places to upload digital photos of your favorite pet, download music and video clips, post on favorite forums of interest. Offline- if you’re exchanging addresses or post office boxes, send print greeting cards and postcards, small items from your area (like a key chain with your state bird).

5. Don’t forget important events. When is the first time you met (even if just online)? When is the first time you decided to be more than just friends? Write these dates down and celebrate them with your online lover. You’d be surprised how grateful your significant other will be. Just because your relationship is only online doesn’t make it any less real and a fundamental part of relationships are celebrating special events together. If you have a problem remembering important dates, use Google calendar or set a reminder in your smartphone.

Tend your online relationship just as you would an offline relationship. Water it with care and over time it can sprout and grow … and who knows, maybe one day it can be something more.
